Ceylon Cinnamon · Sri Lanka

Ceylon Cinnamon built around the buyer specification.

Sri Lanka’s Cinnamomum verum supplied as whole quills, cut quills, quillings and powder. Tell us the form, grade or physical specification, quantity, pack and destination; we verify the sourcing route before we quote.

For food manufacturers, importers, distributors and private-label buyers seeking a specification-led sourcing conversation rather than a generic cinnamon listing.

01 · Choose the form

Four forms. Four different briefs.

The commercial starting point is not simply “cinnamon”. Whole quills, cut quills, quillings and powder differ in presentation, processing and the specifications a buyer needs to control.

01

Quills

Whole 105 cm prepared quills are graded by physical criteria including diameter, quills per kilogram and foxing.

02

Cut quills

Graded whole Ceylon Cinnamon quills cut to the length required by the buyer, often for retail, foodservice or manufacturing formats.

Short pieces of Ceylon cinnamon quills
03

Quillings

Broken pieces of prepared whole quills under 200 mm. They are a recognised commercial form, not simply unspecified broken cinnamon.

04

Powder

Ground Ceylon Cinnamon requires a separate brief for raw-material basis, grind, food-safety controls and packaging.

Product forms are shown for specification guidance. Current source and lot availability is confirmed against the enquiry.

02 · Ceylon identity

Authentic Ceylon. Precisely specified.

Ceylon Cinnamon is Sri Lanka’s Cinnamomum verum, prepared into thin, layered quills and traded in several distinct forms. For an international buyer, authenticity starts with botanical identity and continues through form, grade, processing and documentation.

The name Ceylon Cinnamon has EU Protected Geographical Indication status. If PGI-marked supply is part of the requirement, the relevant eligibility and licensing route is checked as part of sourcing rather than assumed from the product name alone.

03 · Quill grades

Read the grade as a specification.

Sri Lanka’s Department of Cinnamon Development grades whole quills using three physical measures: quill diameter, the number of 42-inch quills per kilogram and the percentage of foxing.

Group Grade Max diameter 42-inch quills / kg Max foxing
Alba Alba 6 mm 45 10%
Continental C5 Extra Special 8 mm 33 10%
Continental C5 Special 10 mm 30 10%
Continental C5 12 mm 27 15%
Continental C4 16 mm 22 15%
Continental C3 18 mm 20 20%
Mexican M5 Special 16 mm 22 60%
Mexican M5 18 mm 20 60%
Mexican M4 21 mm 15 60%
Hamburg H1 23 mm 10 25%
Hamburg H2 Special 25 mm 9 40%
Hamburg H2 32 mm 7 55%
Hamburg H3 38 mm 6 65%

A published grade is a reference point, not a stock promise. State the grade or the physical result you need, and the real source and lot can be checked against it.

04 · Product control

Quills and powder need different controls.

The form changes what can be inspected visually, what needs to be tested and how the product should be protected in packing.

Physical presentation comes first.

Grade or dimensions, length, foxing, broken material, defect tolerances, cleanliness, analytical requirements and pack format should be agreed for the intended use.

Processing changes the specification.

Raw-material basis, grind or particle size, microbiology, treatment or contaminant criteria and packaging barrier become central to the buyer brief.

05 · Buyer specification

Build the brief before the quote.

Six inputs cover most of the information needed to move from a product enquiry to a source, lot and route that can actually be evaluated.

01

Form & grade

Quills, cut quills, quillings or powder; for quills, name the grade or the physical result you require.

02

Physical acceptance

Length, diameter, presentation, foxing, broken material and other defect tolerances where they matter to the use.

03

Food-safety brief

Define the microbiological, pathogen, pesticide, heavy-metal, treatment or other analytical requirements relevant to the buyer and destination.

04

Powder specification

Clarify raw-material basis, grind or particle size, contamination controls and the required moisture or oxygen barrier.

05

Packing & logistics

Unit weight, liner or barrier, bulk or retail format, destination, delivery window and Incoterm or named place if known.

06

Evidence & documents

State any CoA, test report, traceability, origin, PEIS, phytosanitary, treatment or buyer-specific document required.

Pre-export verification PEIS

SLSI describes the quality certificate as consignment-based.

Trade classification: EDB separates cinnamon that is neither crushed nor ground under the 09.06.11 series—including national subheadings for quills and quillings—from crushed or ground cinnamon under 09.06.20. Final declaration classification remains shipment-specific.

06 · From enquiry to quote

Evidence before commercial promise.

The website explains the product. The quotation is built from the source, evidence and route that can support the buyer’s actual brief.

  1. 01 Specify

Form, grade or physical result, quantity, pack and destination.

  2. 02 Match

Identify a sourcing and processing route capable of the requirement.

  3. 03 Verify

Check sample or lot evidence, tests, documents and certificate scope.

  4. 04 Route

Resolve destination rules, packing, logistics and commercial terms.

  5. 05 Quote

Price the verified requirement rather than an assumed commodity.

07 · Buyer questions

Useful answers before you enquire.

Is Ceylon Cinnamon the same as cassia?

No. Ceylon Cinnamon is Sri Lanka’s Cinnamomum verum. Cassia-type cinnamons are different botanical and commercial materials, so an import specification should keep the botanical identity clear.

What do Alba, C5, C4, M4 and H grades describe?

They are recognised Ceylon Cinnamon quill grades. Sri Lanka’s Department of Cinnamon Development grades quills using diameter, the number of 42-inch quills per kilogram and the percentage of foxing.

Can I request a specific Ceylon Cinnamon grade?

Yes. Include the grade in the enquiry, or tell us the physical result your application needs. We then verify whether a sourcing candidate and lot can meet it before quotation.

What is the difference between cut quills and quillings?

Cut quills are graded whole quills cut to a specified length. Quillings are broken pieces of whole prepared quills under 200 mm, with composition limits defined by the Department of Cinnamon Development.

Why is cinnamon powder handled separately?

Grinding changes the specification. Powder may need a defined grind, raw-material basis, microbiological controls, treatment or contaminant limits and a suitable packaging barrier.

What should I include in a Ceylon Cinnamon RFQ?

Send the form, grade or physical specification, quantity, packing requirement, destination and intended use. Add any testing, certification, traceability, treatment, Incoterm or buyer-document requirements that matter to the order.
